Resolving the Tensions: Spirituality in the
Marketplace Seminar
I attended this seminar Saturday, February
21st, 1998 at Regent College. I found it a
great forum to discuss the issues that Marketplace Christians face everyday. Dr.
Charles Ringma, founder of Teen Challenge, launched the session
with an overview of the Theology of Work. Grasping an understanding of work must be
done from three perspectives: What does Scripture say? What does Christian tradition
say? and What are the contemporary realities? Strive Brinn of the Trillium
Corporation shared his personal experiences of the tension between his Christian
faith and the demands of a multi national corporation. Dr. Laura Nash,
Author of Believers in Business, outlined seven common tensions facing
Christians in the Marketplace and provided some insight into resolving these tensions in a
biblical way. R. Paul
Stevens, Interim Dean of Students at Regent College summed up the event by
stating, "There is no tension in a corpse!" The reality of contemporary
experience is that Christians are constantly being "stretched, squashed, and
twisted" as they try and serve God faithfully in the marketplace. Where dose it come
from? Sin, Systems or God? Does faith resolve tension or increase it? How can we live with
tension faithfully? "Lean into it!"
New Marketplace Publication Launched
VOCATIO is a publication of the Marketplace
Theology concentration at Regent College, offering Christian reflection on the ministry of
the whole people of God in the workplace. The first issues features the topic:
"Why Work? Towards a Biblical Work Ethic" with articles from Robert
Banks, Fuller Seminary; Dr. J. V. Larsen, Professional in Residence at Regent
College, Kathleen Siemens, Regent Student and Paul Stevens, Professor of Applied Theology
at Regent College. Some questions this issue attempts to answer: What is a work
ethic? Why do we work so hard (if we do) and why do we work at all? Why do we strive to
work well? With what work ethic were we raised in our family? What work ethic
is communicated to us by the media and advertising? What work ethic is taught us by
word, example and culture in the local church? And -- Why do we work the way we do?
VOCATIO Is available from The Regent College Foundation at
P.O. Box 33276, Seattle WA, 98133.
