The
Inaugural Summit of Christian Micro Enterprise Development Organizations
occurred in Thailand in May The
theme of the Summit was How then shall we lend? Over 300 individuals from
50 plus organizations attended the summit. The purpose of the event was to
understand the role and the relevance of Micro Enterprise Development as a
Kingdom Building tool. Two booklets were published by Opportunity International
(OI) for the event: Reflections on Christian Micro-enterprise Development
by David Bussau and How then shall we lend? A biblical Validation of
Micro-enterprise by David Bussau and Vinay Samuel.
For more information about this event and these booklets please contact
Opportunity International (OI) at www.opportunity.org
or e mail opinfo@opportunity.org.au
After
the conference I updated a directory of Christian Micro Enterprise Development
organizations at the Scruples Site. 60
are listed. The address is: http://www.scruples.org/web/directry/direndev.htm
Please check to see if your organization is listed and if it is not please
contact me at <scruples@csi.com> so
I can add it.
As
I was on the plane to Thailand to attend the CMED Summit I discovered a Wall
Street Article that discussed economic rights for micro entrepreneurs.
I decided to articulate some of these rights in a Magna Carta for
Micro Enterprise Development. Many
of these freedoms are denied Micro entrepreneurs especially women.
I think it important that the Christian Micro Enterprise Development
(CMED) community speak up on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves.
Please
review the draft and submit your comments. Thank you.
Magna
Carta for Micro Enterprise Development Preamble: For the empowerment
of the poor to improve the whole of their lives in the context of their
community we declare that the poor should have:
1.
Freedom to acquire; hold and dispose of property. 2. Freedom to make,
perform and enforce contracts. 3. Freedom to pursue a living, trade
or profession free from excessive government interference. 4. Freedom
to travel, come into and go out of a place in the pursuit of commerce. 5.
Freedom to pursue trade according to one's conscience without forced acceptance
of corrupt practices. 6. Freedom to have access to credit at
reasonable rates of interest without requiring unjust security. 7.
Freedom to legislative and judicial recourse for the settlement of economic
injustice. 8. Freedom to conduct commerce in native language, custom
or according to cultural practice. 9. Freedom to associate together
for the benefit of pursuing common economic or social interests. 10.
Freedom to conduct commerce free from discrimination or persecution on the basis
of tribe; race; colour; sex; religion or disability.
What
is the profile of a competent tentmaker? What are their characteristics in the
areas of personal; ministry; vocational; field; and church development? This
profile is very important because it will form the basis from which TIE shall
develop a training framework, curriculum and assessment tools. TIE values your
input and would like to hear from you. Please contact Ben Bester at gcgroup@iafrica.com
or reply to this e mail and I will forward your comments.
Please reply as soon as possible!
I
discovered this article recently written by Keith and Jeanette Humphrey of True
Aim. The title is Evangelism Face-Forward and it challenges
the common notion of a tentmaker. A
quote from the article reads, The most popular missions philosophy these days
is called tentmaking. In the attempt to justify its obviously worldly pursuits,
an association is forced with the apostle Paul who made tents in Corinth. In
other points, however, the example of the apostle to the Gentiles is not
followed. The bold and confrontational preaching which more aptly characterized
the lifestyle of Paul, is disregarded in favor of compromises more welcome to
society. Tentmaking prides itself on being salt and light to the community- but
it is not the salt which stings, nor the light which smarts...
You can read the full article at < http://www.newcity.org/trueaim/evangff.htm>.
What do you think makes a competent tentmaker?
What is an appropriate definition of tentmaking?
Is any Christian working overseas a tentmaker? Is the secret agent
model of tentmaking biblical? Why? Why not? Let us know your thoughts at <scruples@csi.com>.
We would like to post the range of opinions to the web at the Scruples
Business and Missions page <www.scruples.org/bizetmiz/>
for others to see. Let us know if
you would rather not have your comments posted. Thanks.
The
Institute is a faith-based consulting company that helps organizations
focus on the "up-side", which they call Impact. "Partnering
with Leaders to maximize Impact" is their tag-line. They use
proprietary methods and tools that work equally well for businesses and
non-profits. Despite the fact that
the methodology is comprehensive, they cut through the strategy issues
quickly. Speed, innovation,
and a focus on the end-consumer/target audience are hallmarks.
