Business and Missions Initiative launches Business People into former Soviet Union

Christian missionaries are being trained in business principles. Students from Romania, Germany, and the Russian Republics recently attended a four-week Youth With a Mission program designed to help them develop small business skills so they can go to developing countries where missionaries are not always welcome. "Business can take you places that other activities sometimes cannot," said Mark Markiewicz, who directed the first Christian School of Entrepreneurs. "Some countries may not welcome traditional missionaries, but none are closed to business," he said. A good Christian business can lead others around you to ask, "Why are you here?" and "Why are you honest?" which presents opportunities to share the faith, Markiewicz said. The courses are offered twice a year in England. Contact Mark Markiewicz at markm@holmsted.org.uk for more information.

Business and Missions Initiative reaches High Caste Hindus

High-caste Hindus in Madras, India, are hearing the gospel in computer-training courses. Brahmins, who disdain Christianity because they associate it with the lower-classes, value education and are willing to let teachers at a Youth With A Mission training school tell them about Christ. Up to a dozen students at a time attend the two-to-three month courses, which feature instruction on software and Internet programs.

...Students are given three tracts explaining the gospel and are offered a free New Testament if they want to study further. Instructors and helpers often find opportunities to share their faith with the students. "Many have acknowledged that Jesus Christ is the only true God, but have held back from following Him due to the cost that they would have to pay to do so," said YWAM's Alex Harris. YWAM also runs a ministry for street children and slum dwellers in Madras. Source: http://www.religiontoday.com/summary.html November 6th.) Missionary wins SCRUPLES Award for Innovation in Business and Missions

Mark Tidwell, YWAM Missionary to Nepal, has developed an innovative design for a portable cooking stove for the remote villagers of Nepal. This efficient wood burning stove has the potential to prevent deforestation, severe health problems and disease brought on by the burning of wood in open fires in Nepalese huts. The stove is light weight and can be transported as a sheet of tin into remote villages where it can be assembled onsite. Mark plans to test a prototype and raise capital to have the stove manufactured in India. He is setting up an Import-Export Business to import the stove into Nepal. The business will provide him with a business visa to stay in Nepal long term. He also plans to train a sales staff of local Christians to visit these remote villages and sell the stove. Mark Tidwell has earned the Scruples 1997 award for innovative business and missions activity. For more information and if you wish to partner with Mark in his efforts please contact Hope For The Nations at Post Office Box 1859 Station A, Kelowna, BC Canada V1Y 8P3 or Ralph Bromley at rbromley@awinc.com
